Statesman doesn’t seem to see the same demand as Old Forester’s Whiskey Row bourbons, and is often available to stores that want to carry it. That said. Being a blend from hand-selected casks this must be the flavor profile they are striving for. While it doesn’t feature the same complexity as some bourbons, it is hard to argue against how important drinkability is to this bourbon's overall impact.

So what makes Statesman stand out from the rest of them?Statesman is by far the sweetest and fruitiest of the aforementioned bourbons, and also has the least amount of oakiness.

The first barrel was produced in 1946, and the company is now the Brown Forman Cooperage. The Volstead Act of 1920 initiated Prohibition, but only 6 licensed distilleries in Kentucky, including Old Forester,® were legally allowed to bottle bourbon for medicinal purposes.

Such a shame that none of those flavors come through very well in the tasting. On the palate, the bourbon shows its sweeter side, with notes of banana bread, maraschino cherry, and some eucalyptus all in the mix. The bourbon is rested between 6 and 9 months in this second barrel. Old Forester remains to this day, the only bourbon brand continuously sold by the same company, before, during, and after prohibition. Old Forester has reintroduced a historic Rye recipe from the “Normandy Rye Whiskey brand” acquired by former company president Owsley Brown in 1940. The clear marching order here is wood: The whiskey features a big, burly, char-heavy nose that is immediately redolent of classic Old Forester. It’s a good design, mixing the well known brand with a distinctive style that lets you know this is something different.

The drink of Statesmen, this bourbon is sadly not made in a distillery shaped like a bottle but does offer notes of buttery leather, bold spice and sharp citrus. The ice and the colder temperature counteracts the bitterness in the liquor. Brown Forman claims this is the first documented double barreled bourbon.

The finish is the only weak spot in the experience, as the conclusion of the whiskey is rather thin and grain-heavy. Brown Forman owns the entire bourbon making process from distilling and barreling to aging and bottling.

Statesman is minimally filtered to retain as much character as possible.
