In many ways, I thought this would compliment a non-fiction story like Tara Westover's Educated for it's bleakness, but also for its underlying truth. I don't know what experience the author has had with poverty and despair, but she writes as if she knows it well. I haven't read a book written in the first person in a very long time. Such a childhood of poverty, trash that neighbors and schoolmates ridiculed. She has an unusual relationship with her mother for sure;l and why was she in the hospital to begin with? This is my point.
