In 1937, Joan Stanley, a sheltered 18-year-old, goes up to Cambridge to study Physics. She had graduated with a physics “certificate “ from Cambridge, because women weren’t granted degrees. She attended Newstead Wood School in Orpington, before reading History at Cambridge University. She makes tea for Churchill when he visits the project; he emphasises the importance of not letting ‘the Yanks’ be in control of atomic energy.

The story seems to draw deeply on the true story of Melita Norwood who genuinely did work for the British Non-Ferrous Metals Research Association and who shared details of British Atomic research during the mid 1940's and who was only revealed as a spy following a defection in the early 90s. Reader Reviews. The week long interrogation delves into her studies at Cambridge, her past love for a Communist agitator, and her friendship with the bewildering Sonya. I found myself thoroughly engrossed in the world of Joan, Leo, Sonya and Max, and while I can't say I relate to or approve of all of her choices, one can't help but respond with understanding when it comes to being swept away by idealised young love and the dreams of changing the world. Brilliantly structured and psychologically acute, this compelling novel provides no easy answers, instead offering a kaleidoscope of conflicting choices and questionable motives. Leo is researching an economics PhD, looking for proof that communism works. I love that! I loved it. She makes Joan see it as redressing an imbalance, keeping the promises made by the Allies to the Soviets. War breaks out, and Leo is interned, and then sent to Canada. With the war looming, Joan finds that she is pregnant, and Sonya persuades her to visit a back street abortionist and not tell Leo.

She taught English for a while in a primary school in France before training as a solicitor in London and Paris. She is racked with guilt about her connection to the bomb, and feels that her father would be disappointed in her.

This book is set during the Cold War when Russia, the US and England are developing the atom bomb. Loosely inspired by the story of KGB spy Melita Norwood, this novel tells the story of Joan Stanley, an elderly woman who wakes up one morning to British Security Services knocking on her door asking questions about her involvement with a recently deceased suspected Communist spy.

Jul 2014 She stayed successfully under the radar for over forty years, possibly because nobody suspected a woman of spying. This book does a remarkable job of creating a sympathetic connect. When she attended Cambridge, studying science, she became friendly with a group of friends who were Communists, and she fell in love with one of them. I listened the second part of the book in a day, I couldn't stop. The blend of fact and fiction was satisfying and seamless, at least to my eyes. Based on a sensational true story, Red Joan vividly brings to life the conflicts—between patriotism and idealism, love and duty, courage and betrayal—of a woman who spent a lifetime being underestimated while quietly changing the course of history. Search: [/blackout], This story is interspersed by the present day questioning of the elderly Joan by MI5, who want corroboration of William’s treason.
