Some sewists like to stretch the elastic thread slightly when winding, while others insist that stretching should be avoided at all costs. I just got a Bernina 550 , can’t wait to start shirring cos my previous Brother machine gave me a hard time :( Thanks!
Do this on the other side now, and keep going until you reach the length you want. Your instructions are awesome and the pictures VERY helpful. What is fabric? It didn’t happen before I used elastic thread.
You can wind it by machine as well.
You'll see it start to gather up. I have been wanting to try this!
With your help, sewing with the elastic thread was easypeasy. See how it’s pretty thin (not as thin as regular thread….but still thin) and has a nice stretch to it? ……..and then put it into the machine. It is ok to go very slow or stop stitching and check everything is ok – you need a flat fabric surface to sew, so keep the gathers of the fabric away with both hands holding the fabric straight as you sew. Make sure to use cotton or other lightweight fabric. Enter your email address to subscribe to this blog and receive notifications of new posts by email. Cool. Great tutorial! Worked okay. I find that aligning the right edge of the foot against the line with the needle in the far left position creates a distance of 3/8″. I ended up buying a second bobbin case, so that I can always have one tightened, and not have to worry about loosening it back enough so it doesn’t snap the normal thread. Your tutorials are so detailed yet so easy to understand! Hi, I’ve done shirring in the past on an ancient [electric – just] Many thanks to you! Wind the bobbin – 2/3 full. Besides, it’s on the wrong side that nobody sees. So… :( Mayby I should film it and show it to you !! Shirring and smocking are not quite the same thing.
Come see what I did! Use the foot pedal very slow to wind the bobbin. After a few rows, here is what it looks like so far.
I have read that some machines need their elastic thread wound really tight. The moisture and the heat will shrivel up the elastic from below and will pull in the fabric nicely.
(Or at least a larger one than you generally use.). Need to practice, I guess !!). It can get stretched and out of shape . The elastic thread will evenly gather the fabric while creating stretch and texture. Will definitely have to give it a try. OMG I am sooooooooo grateful for this website. It’s stretchy, really comfy, seriously easy, and a great texture to add to clothing. This would make a sweet little pillow, a bit of work, but I think it would be nifty-do.
We’re almost at the end of summer and I decided to end it on a good note with this super cute tunic/dress. Although you can add shirring to any part of a garment, it’s most commonly used to create shaping at the neckline, bust, or waist. Sometimes I assume everyone knows how to do it. But seriously, don’t fret if your lines are a bit uneven. I hope it helps!! Since this pattern has the added length already drafted for me, I don’t need to add extra to accommodate my ruching.
Crosswise grain of the fabric is best for shirring. The distance between the rows of stitching should be same at all levels; I’m making it, and loving every minute of it! So well done! Ahhhhh, shirring……quick and easy. Sexy off the shoulders hack Can’t imagine why they did that because it’s a very popular character. I would have to make quite a drive for the nearest Jo-Ann’s.
Maybe I’ll try it on an old t-shirt to see how it goes.
Knot the thread firmly … Sewing through multiple layers will make it too hard for the elastic to pull the fabric together. So it like normal after that.
Adjust your stitch length……you may not want the largest setting.
Longer stitch and more stretched out elastic. Smocking is created by hand using embroidery stitches in decorative patterns to gather fabric which creates stretch without the use of elastic thread.
Fix clothing to some thing new : 40 common {Clothing repairs} you may have to do once in a while. Thaks a lot for all your tutorials :D. Oh using your blog post, I gave it a go! I also would make a separate lining for the back of the shirring – because we have rather sensitive skin around our house – even the cloth labels and zippers irritates my daughter’s skin so shirring would definitely be !!!! Cutiepiecreations……I also have the same machine and am struggling with the same issues, if you could please please give a more detailed description of how you got this to work I would be so greatful as I am also new to sewing and just learning :-) thank you so much. I love to gather things with elastic. I was well pleased.
I’ve been trying to do this technique, and haven’t had any success until your tutorial. I finally found out why I couldn’t get the elastic to work on my machine–thanks so much! You can add shirring before or after garment construction. You get thin elastic thread at the stores – you will find lots of uses for it.They are available in two colours – black and white. Here’s a little tip: at the end of your shirring, if all the lines don’t seem even, just spray some water on them and watch the magic! I haven’t done it before so this will be nice to already have some hints. Can you show us how to do smocking using elastic? I also have the same WONDERFUL machine, I got mine at Walmart, great for the price……but I am still struggling…..can you give me any assistance? I’m going to show how to create shirring with elastic thread. Gave the same effect without messing with the bobbin case tension.
Genious! So, thanks again! Insert the bobbin with the elastic thread – Just like you would for regular thread, If you have a metal bobbin case you should loosen the tension for shirring with elastic.
I do not think thick denim will be gathered with the thin elastic thread. I found out the hard way that back stitching is a bad idea! Thank you for posting this! It’s a Singer 1120. :), This is the best shirring tutorial I have ever read and believe me, I have read A LOT about this! Insert your bobbin into the machine normally. Learn how to gather by hand. This is very important and you should do this every time you are starting a row after stopping- this ensures you have a smooth start.
